Summer Camp 2024

California Area School District teachers and administrators offer summer camps for students on campus. The details for each summer camp are listed below for the registration. Summer camp runs from 9:00 - 12:00 and is limited to 25 students per camp. There is no cost for the summer camps due to grant funding. Summer Camp registration will open Friday, March 8, 2024 at 6:00 p.m. and is first-come first-serve for registration.

 

Title: Cardboard Robots

Dates: June 3 - 7, 2024

Ages 10+

Teacher: Mr. Ruddle

Description: During this camp, students will create robotic characters using cardboard, foam board, and other craft materials.  Lights, motors, and servos will be added to make the characters move.  We will also use sensors to make the characters motion-activated.  Students will program the robots with block and/or python coding.  This activity will require students to responsibly use Exacto knives and hot glue.

 

Title: Lego Camp
Dates: June 3-7, 2024
Ages 8 - 14
Teachers: Mrs. Nicholson and Mrs. Bitonti
Description:
Students will work together in groups to construct famous skylines from around the world. They will present their project to each other.

 

Title: OSS (Outdoor Science School)

Dates: June 3-7, 2024 from 12:30 - 3:30 p.m.

Ages 8 - 14

Teachers: Mrs. Nicholson and Mrs. Bitonti

Description: We will explore the science behind many of our favorite pastimes. We are aiming for a "fishy" good time. 

 

Title: In Our Summer Camp Era

Dates: June 3-7, 2024

Ages 7 +

Teacher: Mrs. Matis

Description: Are You Ready For It? If you are a LOVER of all things Taylor Swift, join us as we become BEJEWELED with different Eras Tour themed activities. Warm up your singing voice, because we will be singing along to all our favorite songs! 

 

Title: Can you survive?

Dates: June 3-7, 2024
Ages 10 and up
Teacher: Dr. Jacob and Mr. Hoffman
Description:
Embark on an unforgettable adventure with our outdoor survival summer camp, where young explorers will immerse themselves in the wilderness for a thrilling week of discovery and resilience-building. Throughout the program, campers will learn essential survival skills, including fire-starting techniques, shelter construction, and navigation. The highlight of the week is an exhilarating overnight hike deep into the heart of nature, where campers will put their newfound skills to the test while bonding with fellow adventurers. With safety as our top priority, campers will be introduced to the responsible use of small camping knives and how to identify and mitigate outdoor hazards. 

 

Title: Acts of Kindness Week

Dates: June 3-7, 2024

Ages 8-15

Teacher: Mrs. Oakes

Description: Students will spend the week learning different ways of showing kindness to others. Some examples will be writing letters to veterans, making placemats for nursing home patients, creating kindness chains, creating kindness jars to keep at home and use with their families. The whole week will center around showing kindness to others!

 

Title: Go for the Gold: California's 2024 Summer Olympics

Dates: Sunday, June 9 - June 13, 2024

Ages 10-14

Teacher: Dr. Pollock and Ms. Nagy

Description: Join us for an exciting journey into the world of the Summer Olympics! This immersive camp is designed to educate and inspire young athletes about the history, culture, and sportsmanship of the Olympic Games. Throughout the week, campers will have the opportunity to participate in various Olympic-themed activities, learn about different sports, and engage in friendly competitions.The camp starts on a Sunday with a field trip to a baseball game and kid friendly activities at the ballpark! 

 

Title: Junkyard Wars

Dates: June 10-14, 2024

Ages 9+

Teacher: Mrs. Bonelli

Description: Campers will complete a series of STEM activities/challenges using only “junk” you would find laying around the house. Students are given these challenges and compete either as individuals or in small groups. They do not know what the challenge is until they show up for class! Some examples are; egg drop challenge, balloon race cars, building catapults, marble runs, etc.

 

Title: Youth Athletic Development

Dates: 3 Weeks (M, W, Th) on Weeks of June 10, 2014; June 17, 2024; June 24, 2024 from 12:00 - 1:30 p.m.

Ages 11 - 14

Teacher: Mr. Spicher

Description: The camp provides a safe and structured environment for young athletes to learn the basics of weight training. Under the guidance of experienced professionals, campers will learn proper techniques for various exercises targeting different muscle groups. The program includes drills and exercises tailored to improve agility, speed, and coordination, essential for excelling in various sports.

 

Title: STEM Outdoor Engineering

Dates: June 17-23, 2024

Ages 7-14

Teacher: Ms. Lincoski

Description: Discover your ability to be an engineer! The students will use natural resources to build a fort. With a focus on engineering and STEM abilities, the students will bring creativity to the fort!

 

Title: Mystery and Escape Room Challenge

Dates: June 18-21, 2024

Ages 10+

Teacher: Mr. Hoffman and Mrs. Oakes

Description: The prized Trojan Warrior Helmet is missing!  An item near and dear to the hearts of all California Trojans, and it must be found!  Students will be placed in teams and will participate in daily missions to receive clues to where the missing helmet is located.  The daily missions and clues will lead the team of students to an escape room on the final day.  Will the helmet be found or lost forever?  Most of the week will be spent outside.  Sneakers, sun block, water bottles and comfortable clothes are recommended.  No open toe shoes/flip flops.

 

Title: Kickflip Kids: Skateboarding Summer Camp

Dates: July 8-12, 2024

Ages 6+

Teacher: Dr. Jacob

Description: During our intensive summer camp, students of all ages will immerse themselves in skateboarding art and skills. Campers will paint their own skateboard, build it, and then learn how to ride. With a mix of hands-on learning, games, and outdoor adventures, our summer camp promises an unforgettable experience that fosters confidence, camaraderie, and a lifelong love for skate-inspired activities. A helmet is required and knee pads/elbow pads/wrist guards are suggested. Please contact Dr. Jacob if you need protective gear.

 

Title: Exploring Yoga and Meditation

Dates: July 15-19, 2024

Ages 6-9

Teacher: Ms. Fetsko and Miss Nicholson

Description: Students will explore the basics Yoga and Meditation by learning how to begin their own practice. Benefits, both emotional and physical, of practicing Yoga and Meditation include  

the ability to manage stress, improve focus and attention, increase physical flexibility, balance, coordination and posture.  Students will learn fun Yoga poses and sequences, as well as breathing techniques, participate in mindful walks, create yoga inspired crafts and explore types of meditation.

Description: Students will explore Yoga and Meditation by learning how to begin and sustain their own practice. Benefits, both emotional and physical, of practicing Yoga and Meditation include  the ability to manage stress, improve focus and attention, increase physical flexibility, balance, coordination and posture.  Students will learn Yoga poses and sequences, as well as breathing techniques and guided imagery meditations.  Throughout the week students will participate in mindfulness activities, create yoga inspired crafts and practice a variety of meditation techniques.

 

Title: Strings Attached: A Summer Luthier Adventure

Dates: Initial Meeting May 29, 2024 then weekly office hours (virtual and face-to-face) based on individual progress.

Ages 14+

Teacher: Dr. Jacob

Description: Dive into the world of lutherie at our unique summer camp, where aspiring young artisans will embark on the captivating journey of crafting their own wooden violins. Meeting periodically throughout the summer, each session is tailored to the pace of individual progress, ensuring a deeply personal and enriching experience. Campers will explore the artistry and craftsmanship behind violin creation, from selecting the perfect wood to the final tuning. This hands-on camp not only teaches the technical skills required to craft a beautiful instrument but also fosters patience, precision, and a deep appreciation for music. A typical violin takes over 200 hours, so this camp may extend into the fall. The completed violins will be part of the California Area School District instrument collection.

 

Title: Drama Camp

Dates: July 22 - 26, 2024

Ages 13+

Teacher: Mrs. Reda

Description: Students would gain collaboration skills, self-confidence, time-management abilities, and a sense of pride and responsibility. Resources include “Group Scenes for Young Actors” by Jessica Penziaz, “22 Comedy Ten-Minute Plays” by Laurie Allen, “Contemporary Scenes for Young Actors” by Douglas Parker, and 2016-2018’s “Young Playwrights Anthology” published by City Theatre Company. Students would work together to create and perform a variety show, which would be presented to family and friends on the last day of camp.
